Sweeney Todd – Musical

Shown at the New Athenaeum Theatre | October – December 2025

  • I was assigned the job as lead fabricator for this production, where I was head of undergoing all of the metal work. One of the main construction tasks involved the Barber’s Shop truck approx. 5m x 3m x 2.2m high. This incorporated the mechanics for the trap door, where actors fell through from the barber’s chair.
  • I constructed a large 8m long chute by cutting all of the steel sections to size and welding them together. The chute was flown on stage where prop dead bodies were slid down the chute. This was to simulate dead bodies falling through the trap door from the barber’s chair, after Sweeney Todd had cut the throats of his clients.
  • I also constructed a smaller truck from plywood which had a fabricated metal handrail; this truck was mounted on wheels.
  • I used a Gas type MIG Welder for all the welding scope for this production.

Let The Right One In – Play

Shown at the New Athenaeum Theatre | September – October 2025

  • For this production, I built and modified flats that were used as the main wall of a building. I also used recycled flattage from previous productions repairing and altering them to suit.
  • I fitted vacuum formed panels to sections of the main wall to create a slick, tiled look – suitable for the desired effect of fake blood running down it.
  • The overall completed set, with all its moving components, was too heavy to be lifted and moved as one object on stage. Therefore, all of the separate elements and moving parts were assembled on stage during the fit up for this production.

Spring Awakening – Musical

Shown at the New Athenaeum Theatre | March – May 2025

  • This set design was inspired by Gothic architecture as the show was set in an old boarding school. This was achieved by the construction of 8m tall flats. I helped design the framework to incorporate many large windows to capture the architectural style of a Gothic period church.
  • Constructing all five of the large window flats was a challenging process, as we had to design our own framing style out of timber. We had to add additional framing to retain structural stability as the flats had many openings. Additionally, we had to add intricate Gothic moulding details around the windows and this was accomplished by the use of jigs and formers to keep them identical.
  • The fit up for this show was a long process as it required a large team to transport and position all of the flattage correctly onto an elevated deck by using machinery and wires in the Athenaeum Theatre. Following this, we then had to clad the rest of the set, add finishing trims and moulding details to the set.

The Magic Flute – Opera

Shown at the New Athenaeum Theatre | January -March 2025

  • The design brief for the stage set was to replicate a typical office. I assisted on the construction of a large ceiling that spanned the majority of the stage. The ceiling was split into five separate flats so it could be easily manhandled and transported.
  • The ceiling was suspended by wires attached to 27 hook-up points connected to the mother grid formed with aluminium trusses. I assisted with suspending and levelling the ceiling on the trusses, ensuring it was level across its entire length. It was then lifted by the rigging stage crew by automation, using motorised winches into position above the stage.
  • I assisted on the construction of break away walls for the actors to walk through. This was achieved by building a timber frame and cladding the wall with foam board sculpted thinner on the inside, which made it easier to break away as the actors came through the wall.

She Loves Me – Musical

Shown at the New Athenaeum Theatre | October – December 2024

  • I built a free standing spiral staircase with a connecting cantilever platform made from 25mm x 70mm timber held together with mortice and tenon joints.
  • I was assigned to design and craft a spire / pinnacle for the top of the staircase. To achieve this, I laminated large blocks of timber together and machined it down to my required shape and size on the wood lathe.
  • I also assisted with the construction of a spinning platform for this production which was located centre stage.
  • Additionally, I crafted and fitted decorative spindles for the staircase which I achieved by modifying some existing mouldings and attaching them to wood to create the finished spindles.

Down The Plughole – Short Student Film

Filmed at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland | June – July 2024

  • I modified existing flats from a previous production to create a square room which were then supported by French braces.
  • I also modified an existing door complete with new fascia trim which I installed onto the flat.
  • I assisted with installing real bathroom appliances such as the bath tub, wash hand basin and toilet. I boxed in the appliances with plywood to create the illusion of a complete functional bathroom.

The Great Grumpy Gaboon – Scottish Chamber Orchestra

Children’s touring show | December 2024

  • I constructed two large flats of 2m high x 1.5m long. The flats were hinged in the middle to fold on themselves, allowing them to be easily transported.
  • I constructed six French braces which were pinned and plated, held together with wiggle pins made out of 4mm plywood pinned and glued onto the braces.
  • I assisted in the making of a cut out of the Great Grumpy Gaboon character supported and friction held on an oval base, capturing the illusion of it being free standing. The Gaboon character could also be separated from the base for ease of transportation.
