Charles William Haggarty

I am a third-year student at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, pursuing a BA in Production Arts and Design, specialising in set and stage construction. Throughout my studies and work experiences, I have gained valuable insights into set production, allowing me to manage projects from concept to completion.
I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of projects, including operas, musicals and plays, where I have constructed flats and scenery for productions. I have also been involved in the fit-up and strike of various shows, working within tight deadlines and managing multiple tasks under pressure.
In addition to practical experience, I have developed my drafting skills and working from technical drawings. I can use a range of machinery such as wall saws, radio arm saws and table saws, as well as hand tools including planes, chisels and Japanese pull saws. I am confident in using these tools to bring designs to life while ensuring the quality and safety of each project.
In my third year, I have gained a great amount of metal work experience using cold cut saws, argon mix, gas MIG welders for ERW, mild box steel and a range of thickness of plate steel.
I have worked with film students at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, assisting with design and building sets for short film productions. I have also collaborated with external companies, such as the Scottish Chamber Orchestra to build a set for a children’s touring show and with Pretty Scenic in Glasgow, assisting on scenic builds for TV and film projects.
These experiences have further broadened my knowledge and given me the opportunity to work in diverse environments, enhancing my skills as a set and stage carpenter.
