About

Charles William Haggarty

I am a third-year student at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland (RCS), pursuing a BA in Production Arts and Design, specialising in set and stage construction. Throughout my studies and work experience, I have gained valuable insight into set production, allowing me to manage projects from concept to completion.

I have had the opportunity to work on a variety of RCS projects including operas, musicals and plays, where I have constructed flats and scenery for productions. I have also been involved in the fit-up and strikes of various shows, working within tight deadlines and managing multiple tasks under pressure.

In addition to practical experience, I have developed my drafting skills and working from technical drawings. I can use a range of machinery such as wall saws, radial arm saws and table saws, as well as hand tools including planes, chisels and Japanese pull saws. I am confident in using these tools to bring designs to life, while ensuring the quality of workmanship and working safely on every project.

During my third year, I have gained a great amount of metal work experience using cold cut saws, argon mix, gas MIG welders for ERW box section steel, and a range of different thickness of plate steel.

I have collaborated with film students at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland, assisting in designing and building sets for short film productions. I have also worked with external companies, such as the Scottish Chamber Orchestra to build a set for a children’s touring show and with Pretty Scenic in Glasgow, assisting on scenic builds for TV, film and documentaries.

These experiences have broadened my knowledge and given me opportunities to work in diverse sectors of set construction within the industry.
