Sweeney Todd – Musical

Shown at the New Athenaeum Theatre

  • I was the lead fabricator for this production, where I was head of undergoing all of the metal work. I lead on the construction of barber shop truck and the mechanics of the trap door, which the actors fell through, off the barber chair.
  • I cut all of the steel and welded together the large 8 metre long shoot that was flown on stage, where prop dead bodies were dropped down during the show.
  • I also made a smaller truck base out of timber and 18mm wesa plywood, which was on wheels with a handrail that I fabricated. I used a MIG welder to produce and fabricate all of the metal work for this production.

Let The Right One In – Play

Shown at the New Athenaeum Theatre

  • I built and modified flats that were used at the back wall for the play. Recycled flattage was used which I modified and repaired
  • I fitted vacuum form panels onto the wall of flats to create a slick tiled look, suitable for the effect of fake blood running down it
  • There were many set elements that I had to assemble on stage with moving components, as they were too heavy to be lifted and moved as one object

She Loves Me – Musical

Shown at the New Athenaeum Theatre

  • I built a self-standing spiral staircase with a cantilever platform attached to it. Made out of 25 x 70 timber held together with mortis tenon joints.
  • I was assigned to craft a spire for the top of the staircase. I laminated large blocks of timber together and carved it out on the wood lathe.
  • I assisted with the construction of the spinning platform which was centre stage.
  • I made and fitted decorative pieces on the hand rail and below the steps of the staircase.

Down The Plughole – Short Student Film

Filmed at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland

  • I assisted with modifying old flats to create a square room supported by French braces.
  • I fitted an existing door and made a trim to run along the outside of it.
  • I assisted with fitting real bathroom appliances such as the sink, toilet and bath tub and fabricated box using plywood units to fit with the set.

The Great Grumpy Gaboon – Scottish Chamber Orchestra

Children’s touring show

  • I helped make two large flats which were over 2 meters tall and 1.5m long. The flats were made to hinge in the middle to fold in on itself for easier transport.
  • I created six French braces which were pinned and plated: held together with wiggle pins and plates made out 4mm plywood which were pinned and glues onto the braces.
  • I assisted in the making of a cut out of the ‘Bagoon’ character which was friction held on a oval platform to make it free standing but could be separated for transport.

The Magic Flute – Opera

Shown at the New Athenaeum Theatre

  • The design idea’s was for the set to look like a typical office and I assisted on building a large ceiling that spanned the majority of the stage. The ceiling was split into five different flats to be easily transported.
  • I assisted on making a break away wall for an actor to walk through. This was done by making a timber frame cladded in thin foam board which was carved into, making it easier to break.
  • The ceiling was suspended by wire attached to 27 hook-up points which connected to a mother grid made up of trusses. I helped with suspending the ceiling and ensuring that it was level across its full length before it was lifted up by automation.
